SkinPen MicroNeedling
A natural approach to skin rejuvenation
What is SkinPen Medical Microneedling?
SkinPen is the world’s first FDA-cleared medical microneedling device that stimulates the skin’s natural ability to repair itself. As we age we lose collagen & elastin so the natural architecture of our skin deteriorates. This deterioration leads to fine lines, wrinkles, large pores and uneven skin texture.
How does it work?
SkinPen comfortably creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin (98,000 channels per minute) to trigger the body’s natural wound healing process by stimulating our fibroblast cells. This process results in the formation and remodeling of collagen, which supports the underlying tissue.
With this treatment, we initiate your body’s ability to heal and regenerate in response. We initiate the process, your body does the rest.
Who is this treatment best suited for?
SkinPen™ is suitable for most skin types and multiple concerns. It can be used to help various skin issues such as ageing, wrinkles, UV damage, rosacea, acne, dilated pores, milia, scarring, stretch marks and more.
As we age our fibroblast cell activity reduces, as does their ability to be stimulated to reproduce collagen & elastin, therefore it’s important to think about collagen-stimulating procedures like SkinPen earlier rather than later to achieve best possible results.
How often should I have this done?
The frequency of SkinPen treatments will be advised at your initial skin consultation [link] (please book separately) & results/downtime will be improved if your skin is prepared (eg with Vitamin A/Calecim) & barrier optimised for at least 4-6 weeks prior to commencing your first SkinPen.
In general if you are looking for overall skin rejuvenation alongside your homecare regime 3 treatments per year (4-6 weeks apart) will be of great benefit.
If you are treating a specific skin issue eg scarring/pigmentation you may benefit from more regular SkinPen treatments initially.
Is there downtime after this treatment?
Downtime post-procedure will vary from person to person. Redness, swelling +/- bruising is expected. Flaking may occur as the skin turnover increases. Most skins will settle well within 1-2 days, though rarely redness, inflammation, bruising could persist 1-2 weeks.
How long does it take? [+/- options?]
We apply a prescription topical numbing cream prior to commencing your SkinPen treatment. You can relax on the treatment bed while this takes effect.
As a guide, in total a SkinPen face treatment will take 75 minutes approx. Addition of other areas eg neck/ body scar will add another 15+ mins (we can advise better at your consultation).
Our most popular add-on, availed by most with good reason, is the application of Calecim Serum (concentrated stem-cell derived growth factors) after treatment. You take home the remainder of the vial and apply as directed in the following days. Over our years of experience with this we have seen results and downtime improve dramatically.
A newer addition to our add-on menu is the Cellderma GF5 New Generation. Your take-home GF5 includes growth factors, ceramides, peptides and hyaluronic acid to further nourish and calm the skin in the weeks after treatment.
Dermalux LED light therapy is a scientifically-backed method of improving initial redness & swelling, and further promoting collagen synthesis.
What are the usual pre-treatment guidelines?
As for all skin treatments we ask you to remove makeup prior to arrival so you can get the most from your treatment time.
To optimise your SkinPen results and reduce downtime, please ensure you have completed a skin consultation with one of our Team, and that you have been advised regarding optimal skincare (eg barrier repair/retinoids)ideally for at least 1 month before your first treatment.
We advise temporarily stopping active skincare eg retinol/retinoids/exfoliants/acids 5 days before your planned treatment.
Avoid major sun exposure & self-tanner for 2 weeks before & after your treatment.
Skin must be free from infection, coldsores, acute inflammation so treatment can proceed.
What are the usual post-treatment guidelines?
We advise following your post-treatment skincare regime carefully in order to avoid delayed healing. You do not use any other products, including cleanser & SPF, within the first 24 hours post-procedure. Strictly avoid sun exposure for the first 24 hours post-procedure especially. You can return to sunscreen use 24 hours after (do not apply before this). Continue to minimise sun exposure carefully for at least 72 hours as the initial healing takes place.
Avoiding strenuous exercise/excessive perspiration/swimming/saunas in the days post-procedure is also important.
Active skincare can be restarted a week post-treatment.
What are the main contraindications?
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Roaccutane therapy within the last 6 months
Irritated/inflamed skin in the treatment area (eg very active acne/rosacea)
Current skin infection eg coldsores, fungal, bacterial
Bleeding dysfunction and use of blood thinners
